Third sector job losses - bad news for BS?

17 Jan 2011 by Karl Hallam

News today that the number of people working in the third sector reduced by 2% in the third quarter of 2010. Is this bad or good news? Depends on your perspective we imagine. A straw poll in our shared workspace (Spaceworks Sheffield - populated by Architects, culture consultants, policy wonks, tourism experts) drew mixed views. Some thought it was a sign that the Big Society idea was failing already and that the cuts were biting. Others thought it might suggest that at last the charity sector is being cut down to size after a decade of indulgence under the last government.

Cadence's view is that this probably tells us nothing! But, it is does throw up some interesting questions:

  1. If it is a trend will it worry the government?
  2. Will this further agitate a sector that the government could all too easily get into arguments with that it oculd do without?
  3. Where will Ed Miliband want to position himself and his party with the third sector?
  4. Will these job losses (it amounts to 13,000 actual posts) be made up for by new jobs in the private sector?
