Unfit children

4 Mar 2008 by Karl Hallam

England footballer Michael Owen says: "We all know that kids don't take as much exercise as they used to. When I was young, my mum was quite happy to let me go outdoors on my own but she'd think twice about it now because the streets are no longer as safe. I certainly wouldn't be keen to let my kids go to the park on their own. So kids tend to stay at home much more and watch TV.

"There were several people I looked up to when I was young and if I'd had the opportunity to meet them it would have given me a tremendous boost. And if I can have the same effect on some of the kids in school, then hopefully they will be inspired to take their fitness more seriously."

Could Owen do for sport what Jamie Oliver did for school dinners?

The major problem I have with most of these sites is that they don't offer the eenvts in any kind of format that's portable. (You may have notices this is a little beef of mine, making things semantic)I've written to event Sheffield on numerous occaisons to askif they can make their eenvts available as RSS or ical so they can be easily included on other sites, or in my Google Calendar)Maybe if more people wrote to ask for the same, we might have more luck?

Yes, I a session with them at Hallam FM in 1996 and reecodrd their gig at The Leadmill, too. A band far better than their chart record suggests.Readers of this forum might be interested in a project I am developing at radio2XS to re-focus on the Sheffield scene of 20 years ago: we have loads of sessions and demos from the 1990s and are planning to involve as many of the bands' members as we can find.Anyone who can help, please get in touch.Jeff
