The first Hearing for the Blueprint for structured community youth work in clubs takes place this week. An interesting selection of experts will give evidence on what they think makes a great club. This follows coverage of research into the relationship between ASBOs and clubs.
The Guardian led with 'Modern clubbing for the kids' and went on to quote youth worker Jerry Ward, who said: 'It's difficult to explain just how important these places are. It's not just getting young people off the streets, it's giving them a space where they don't feel threatened.'
Youth Work Now picked up the story and said 'Youth clubs help curb antisocial behaviour', which is not what the research carried out by Cadence and Sheffield University strictly said. However, it is not a big jump to get to that assumption and further research might be able to discover how true such a statement is.
The project is really starting to take shape now and having David Blunkett as Champion will help, too. More updates will follow over the coming months.
