Re-connecting people and place

9 Jan 2008 by Karl Hallam

Cadence Works are putting the finishing touches to a joint EPSRC research proposal: Re-connecting people and place - The Role of Walking and Cycling in Creating Sustainable Communities. The proposal arose out of a Walking and Cycling Workshop put together by EPSRC and Sustrans and is in conjunction with Cardiff and Surrey Universities. The research is timed to coincide with Sustrans' connect2 project.

The proposal focuses on analysing the way people walk and cycle connect to places they pass though and people they meet when they move around. If it goes ahead it could shed light on whether places that encourage walking and cycling are places where young people are more likely to play and older people feel safe to be out and about and chatting with nieghbours. In other words it might bring about more pressure to create more suitable environments for walking and cycling not just because of these activities potential health and climate benefits, but because such places are better places to live, work and play.
