What makes an entrepreneur?

17 Jul 2007 by Cadence

Is there any reason why people who use mental health services can't be entrepreneurs?

In this article Sophy Hallam (consultant.) and Patience Seebohm (independent researcher) discuss what makes an entrepreneur, and Paul Grey, Ross Parker and Mark Swift, (all experts by experience in mental health and enterprise), share their views on running your own business.

They use the term ‘entrepreneur' to mean people who wish to develop their own business as a self employed individual, as well as those who wish to develop a social enterprise - a  business with a social purpose.

Teaching enterprise

Where does the ability to be an entrepreneur come from? Is it something you're born with, or is it something you can be taught?

Opinion is divided. Certainly, who you know is important - you are much more likely to become an entrepreneur if you know someone who has already started a business.

Sophy runs courses for people who want to start their own business. She finds that some people in her classes seem naturally more entrepreneurial than others. These are the ones who shine in the exercises about creating business ideas, spotting opportunities, negotiating, networking and doing the necessary sums to work out cash flow and profit margins.

But - and it's a big but - these are not necessarily the people who come through to the next stage of the process. Here Sophy and her colleagues offer one to one guidance working alongside people as they move their business idea from the "wouldn't it be good if...." stage to "I could do it like this..." stage.

And this process challenges everyone at some point. For some it's a fear of finances or a fundamental doubt that they really, truly could run their own business. For others it might be an over-confidence in their abilities which reduces their ability to adapt their idea. It's those with the ability to keep going when faced with the innumerable barriers that crop up along the way that are more likely to make it through.

So where does this leave us on the born entrepreneurs v the learnt entrepreneurs debate? Well, the ability to be entrepreneurial (both to have the idea, and the ability to persist with it) may be latent in far more of us than we realise, but for some, there are many barriers in our way.

Obstacles to business

The barriers we're talking about here are not only ones relating to having money to start, having a good idea or having financial skills. We're also talking about doubting the belief that persistence in the face of difficulties can win through. If you've lost touch with the world of work, you may think that obstacles will succeed in stopping you. Statistically speaking, mental health service users are less likely to try out self employment and less likely to succeed[1]

If we work on the assumption that lots of people have latent entrepreneurial ability, what can we offer that might make a difference here?

This is the challenge that Sophy took up with her colleagues in Partnership WTP, a consultancy specialising in supporting enterprise. They developed two projects: one to work with people who had experienced mental health difficulties (called the Laughing Buddha Bubble Incubator); and one to work with people who lived in inner-city communities in Manchester with higher levels of worklessness (Business Plus).

Their approach mirrors the research evidence of ‘what works' when supporting people with mental health problems into a paid job. They try to instil in potential entrepreneurs the belief that they can succeed if they really want to. Many readers of Life in the Day will know that ‘self efficacy' - this belief in one's ability to succeed - is perhaps the key factor determining those mental health service users who will get and keep employment and those who will not[2] . Self belief has more significance than diagnosis, the presence or absence of symptoms of ill-health, or history of hospitalisation[3]. Also, relevant to our debate, self belief can be fostered and encouraged by mental health professionals and employment support workers. It can be acquired (and lost) through their influence.

Not everyone has access to positive workers. Recent research suggests that some people with mental health problems can and will succeed in getting employment even if they lack professional help, while others will fail even if they receive the best possible employment support[4]. Some people just have the drive and determination to succeed. The research suggests that many people with mental health problems who persevere regardless of assistance are from Black and minority ethnic communities.

African and Caribbean entrepreneurship

African and Caribbean people in the UK are 2 to 3 times more likely to become entrepreneurs than the wider population[5]. Part of the explanation may come from the story of Len Dyke, who died last year. It has been said that he laid the foundations for a Black enterprise culture unknown in the UK in the 1960's[6]. Like Paul, he was an ordained minister, he had a trade and he had a keen sense of social justice. Heavily involved as a civil rights activist, he felt that the way forward for the Black community was to set up its own businesses rather than tolerate discrimination and inequality. He became a multi-millionaire, selling beauty products, while continuing to provide advocacy on citizenship issues.

This refusal to accept inequality within our established systems (such as education, health, business) may partly explain why so many African and Caribbean people seek success independently. Their refusal to accept discrimination coupled with a sense of social responsibility is echoed in some of the comments from the three entrepreneurs below.

Experts in enterprise

To find out more, Sophy and Patience consulted Paul, Ross and Mark who have used mental health services and are now working in social enterprises. Paul Grey has developed many initiatives under the banner of ‘Grey's Services', including home maintenance, mental health consultancy, publishing a book about his experiences in the mental health system and he combines this with work as Pastor in Nuneaton. Ross Parker is setting up a social enterprise in Dewsbury which offers the opportunity for gardening to people with serious mental health problems. Mark Swift is director of a ‘Mental Health and Well-Being' consultancy in St. Helens.

Why did you choose enterprise?

For Paul, the appeal comes from creating, selling and serving:

"The first part is the creation. If you create something - like I created a book -there are the joys of organising the different parts - having the idea, getting it to a designer, then seeing an idea developed into a product.

And people actually purchasing that product! I think that's one of the great parts of being self employed. They purchase something which you've created. For me that's a special moment.

In Grey's Services, I started work on a voluntary basis. I used to carry tools in my Classic Triumph to do maintenance work for elderly folk. I was just so passionate about it - to serve, to bring order out of chaos. Also the sense of respect, customer service, of taking care. After I resigned from the voluntary job, one of the elderly folk asked me to come back to do more for her and the neighbours started to ask too, so that's where paid work started."

Paul also speaks of discrimination: "It's not easy when you've got a mental health history and a record. One of the attractive parts about being self employed is you don't have to go through job application forms."

Ross puts this another way: "I just had a strong feeling of injustice and recognised a gap in services for users - and also for others."

Mark feels that socio-economic factors lie behind much mental distress and self employment can be a way out: "We're throwing a medical intervention and diagnosis at what is essentially a social and economic problem. If you look at the workplace - bullying, harassment, prejudice - these are the seeds of mental health problems. But telling people that they can never work for the rest of their lives is going to perpetuate the problem. Working and having a responsibility, having a commitment, these are the seeds of positive mental health. It's about being valued, about belonging, about striving for more, attaining and achieving."

When did you decide to begin?

For Paul, the need to get started arose from within: "You've got to want to change. You've got to get so tired or fed up with where you are that you want to move on. I started when I got tired of the benefit system.... Then, you have to find out what you are passionate about. If you know your vision, you can try it out on a voluntary basis. You can test your health without the risk of stepping out. Voluntary work doesn't mean going to a Voluntary Bureau, you might just go down the road and spend time with someone who is doing something you are passionate about. Alternatively, get a job in that area but it's not easy. Fuel your idea, get the magazines, see if there is a course on it, find out if you can implement it in a small way, really saturate yourself with information, then like a seed it will begin to grow. Don't leave it as an idea  - do something with it.

Ross too just knew when the time was right: "The right time for me was when I left the Centre basically. I knew without any positive and meaningful activity I could end up right back where I started. I also knew I would have to watch what and how much I did. I just took a deep breath and went for it. Against my children's wishes. There's no right time - you just know when you have to do something. When that happens just go for it."

What support did you need?

There are different kinds of support you need. Paul and Ross speak of getting the right people to provide financial support:

Paul: "You have to have financial knowledge. I had the support of my father in-law who started his own business, and I was able to use the same accountant as him, I was able to use the same bank. Having someone to guide you through the maze makes a difference.

The main thing is that the person giving support knows what they are doing. It's not worth going to someone who has never started their own business. The government organisation person is getting paid anyway, whereas the guy who is out there on the ground knows what it's like to have an overdraft and bills to be paid.

You may have to do a business plan if you want finance. Banks eliminate a lot of people because they want you to fit into their linear fashion, but many people don't think linear."

Ross: "The biggest and worse challenge is going for funding. Keep dogging them because some of them can just pass you over. The worst experience I have had was with the Social Services Community Support Liaison. That was the top men. They had the cheek to tell me what people with mental health needs want - and what's good for them. And if you listen to the stuff they say it's laughable. They just don't have any idea whatsoever. All my local Development Workers have tried to change our project."

Mark speaks of personal and practical support from people who understand what you are doing: "Make sure you have the support structures in place for you if you're going to develop a social enterprise. You need to have somebody to support you who will be there in a crisis. And that's for someone who has had mental ill health and someone who hasn't. If you haven't then I would suspect that starting a social enterprise will probably cause one at some point. Make sure you have people around you who understand what it is you're trying to do - people who believe in you.

I would say that you should probably spend the first six months networking with people who are likely to support you to realise your goals. For example, we spent the last 12 months working with PRIMHE, a large think tank which operates in the UK between primary care and mental health and they now accredit our work and back us. That's really important for us."

Didn't risk deter you?

All three of our entrepreneurs see an element of risk as inevitable but it is a hurdle they can overcome. For Paul: "Life is full of risk, isn't it, whether you have a mental health problem or not. You minimise risk by finding out if your idea can be a reality. Can it sell? Is it needed? And have I got the ability to financially manage it and who can I get to support that? In business you do go through dry spells, difficult times, but if you surround yourself with people who are like-minded, you are more likely to get support. I have had difficult times but, for me, the freedom to create your destiny is always going to outweigh these."

Mark too talks of perseverance: "I certainly wouldn't take any knock back as a sign that you are not worthy because, if anything, you'll come across many more set backs than you will good things initially. But if you believe in it and you put the work in, it will pay off eventually, I'm sure of it."

Ross echoes their words: "It is risky but believe in yourself and keep telling yourself you can do it."

What motivates you?

Our three entrepreneurs are not motivated by finance alone. Paul explains that some people (like himself at times in his life) have a regular job which provides financial security while their enterprise, which they pursue with passion, provides an erratic, additional income. For full time entrepreneurs, income can still be erratic but there are other considerations: "Thinking about people I know who are self employed, I would say they are happy. Some have big houses and cars. It's possible, but I believe it's more possible to create different kinds of wealth and richness. For me, money is a by-product, it is never a first product."

Ross has similar views: "I don't think it's about getting rich. In fact at certain stages you could be worse off. If things work out you can always became independent and self sufficient, but it's not a get rich thing, at least not for me. It's about staying out of hospital and working with others, like minded people. I find social enterprise to be very rewarding. I am working in something I enjoy at my own pace and with people I can relate with. I am rich knowing that I am helping someone else as well as myself.

What's not so good is I still have to struggle with my personal finances but I get over it. The very, very best thing is that my daughter has said ‘You have done it - when everyone, including friends and family, said you wouldn't.' That was the best experience I have had."

What did mental health services offer?

Ross speaks of getting invaluable support from her key worker at times of difficulty. Paul feels this kind of support is rare: "The Care Programme Approach (CPA) should actually be about a person's vision, around helping to resource a person to move towards the area they are passionate about. A business plan for my life! I have seen one or two people in mental health services who think:- how can I best facilitate this person? But generally, social workers and others are not entrepreneurial minded, so the person ends up being nanny'ed. Business is a risk, and there's not much risk around social work."

What advice would you give to someone with mental health problems who is considering self employment?

Paul speaks of the need for all hopeful entrepreneurs to know yourself, when to rest and where your talents lie. Ross speaks for the three entrepreneurs when she says: "My advice to other people recovering from mental health problems is:

Conclusions

Enterprise is currently a buzz word in government. The Department of Health has its own grant making Social Enterprise Unit. There is a huge emphasis on enabling people with mental health problems and disabilities to earn their living. Will and can our public services make the connection and provide the enabling inspiration given here by Paul, Ross and Mark? Or will they assume that the only people capable of being entrepreneurs are those who fit the image and toe the bureaucratic line?

We believe that enterprise is not an easy path for anyone. However, if an individual wants to be an entrepreneur, and if they are given the encouragement to believe in their abilities and to gain the skills they need, they will succeed regardless of whether or not they have experience of mental ill-health.
