This week’s Foresight report on obesity got a bit overshadowed by Ming Campbell’s resignation. That was a shame as for the first time the debate moved on beyond burgers and turkey twizzlers.
Our sedentary lifestyle and reduced walking and cycling were featured and discussed by people who could not be described as the usual suspects. The report actually talked about the role in the planning system in getting people active, this is a big step forward which Cadence welcome and follows on from recent views posted on the website.
However good it is that the quality of the debate has improved, action is required now - new housing and new schools are being built ... are measures to reduce obesity being designed in?
Probably not in most cases, 'sustainable neighbourhoods' (and buildings) in local authority speak are not about promoting cycling and walking and reducing car use.
Perhaps Planning Committees need to have reports that give the view of the local PCT on any new development. 'Obesity audits' perhaps?
